The West Bank and the Gaza Strip make up the Palestinian Territories, the West Bank being governed by the Palestinian National Authority and Israeli military forces, and the Gaza Strip by the Hamas party.

The territories were occupied by Israel from the 1967 war to 1993, when they were transferred to The Palestinian National Authority. In 2005, Israel pulled out its forces from the Gaza Strip, however the international community still considers both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip to be occupied by Israel.

Tensions between the Fatah and Hamas parties have led to violence between the parties’ armed fractions, culminating in Hamas seizing power in Gaza in June 2007.

In April 2011 the two parties signed an agreement of reconciliation.
